How to Protect and Care for Your Prosthesis In 3 Simple Steps

Prosthetics Maintenance

Just like most things in life, you’ll get more mileage and better results out of your prosthesis if you take regular care of it. Prostheses require regular maintenance and adjustments. In this article, you’ll learn how to clean, and examine your prosthesis as well as your socket. We’ll also discuss ways you can make your day-to-day usage easier and more comfortable.

Establish a Daily Route for Care

Following a daily routine to care for your prosthesis will make it easier to keep your device in tip-top shape. Here are some easy steps to add to your routine:

  • Gently cleanse your residual limb every day after you remove your prosthesis. Use a mild soap and water and let the area dry completely.
  • Examine your residual limb for any tenderness, swelling, or physical changes.
  • If you are experiencing perspiration from your residual limb, you may find it useful to apply a bit of baking soda to the area that comes in contact with the prosthesis.
  • Apply a fragrance-free lotion to your residual limb and massage into the skin.
  • Next, use a clean, soapy rag to clean the socket of the prosthesis. Let dry.
  • Check the prosthesis for any damage and make a note of anything to discuss with your prosthetist.
  • Have several clean socks on hand to wear with your device. Change throughout the day if necessary.
  • If you use a leg prosthesis, only use shoes that fit the heel height designed for your prosthesis.

 Stay Active

Thanks to technological advancements, you can enjoy a healthy, active lifestyle while wearing a prosthesis. For certain activities, a specific prosthesis may be required. Be sure to discuss your goals and lifestyle with your prosthetist so you can continue all the activities you enjoy.

It will take time to build up your stamina after you are first fitted for your prosthesis. You may need to use an assistive device at first. Follow your physical therapy exercises consistently to increase your comfort level with the device and overall endurance.

Adjustments and Maintenance

You will need to have your prosthesis serviced at least once a year. This is a great opportunity to discuss any concerns with your prosthetist and ask questions. However, if you’re having issues with fit or notice damage, contact your prosthetist right away. It’s important to have the device repaired as quickly as possible to avoid further damage and risk of injury.
